What a bodyguard actually does
Most of the work happens before anyone sees it. Before a detail, the agent looks at where you are going, how you are getting there, where the car will wait, which door you will use, and what the room will look like when you walk in. On the day, the agent stays close enough to move you and far enough back to let you have your evening.
When something does go wrong, the job is to get you away from it, not to win it. A good agent is judged by how rarely they have to touch anyone.

Armed agents hold Tennessee armed security registration, which is a separate qualification from a civilian carry permit and involves additional firearms training and a marksmanship standard. Whether a detail should be armed depends on the threat, the venue, and the client, and it is settled during the consultation rather than assumed.

Many requests are short: a birthday on Lower Broadway, a visiting athlete who wants to walk around downtown, a speaker who needs to get from the green room to the car. Others turn into a private security detail that covers every day of a visit, or travel protection that goes with you to the next city.
The agent is the same kind of person either way. What changes is how much advance work is done, how many people are on the detail, and whether it includes a security driver.

An agent in a black suit at a honky-tonk is a spectacle. We dress for the room: a jacket at dinner, jeans and boots on Broadway, black backstage, and, if your group has a look, the same look. Protection works better when nobody can pick it out from across the bar.

Most firms, including us, set a minimum number of hours per agent, because a detail has setup and travel time on either side of it. The minimum is confirmed when we quote.
As close as the situation needs and no closer. In a quiet restaurant that might be a table near the door. Walking down Broadway on a Saturday it will be arm's length.
In public, people can generally take photos. What an agent can do is position you, steer you away from a camera, and keep someone from getting into your space. On private property, the owner's rules apply.
